‘Kim + Leanne’ is the brainchild of long time Kim Salmon collaborator, Mike Stranges, who suggested that Kim Salmon and Leanne Cowie (both from the Scientists) record an album of new Salmon/Stranges compositions.Stranges’ history with Salmon includes producing the Kim Salmon and the Surrealists’ album Grand Unifying Theory, as a songwriter, member and co-producer of Precious Jules, and more recently, working on The Darling Downs album In the Days When the World Was Wide and the Kim Salmon/Spencer P Jones album Runaways.
Salmon and Stranges, both Melbourne-based, wrote an album’s worth of songs and sent them to Cowie in Sydney for her consideration and input.
Over Easter 2012, they all converged on Sound Park Studios in Melbourne and recorded 12 songs, including Cowie’s vision of a slowed down, noise drenched rendition of The Rolling Stones’ classic ‘Dead Flowers’, and road-tested the material as the aptly named “ScienceTest”.
Not happy with that moniker, they decided for simplicity’s sake to call this project ‘Kim + Leanne’, although the forthcoming album will include the track ‘ScienceTest’ as an enduring memory of the initial idea.
To coincide with the ATP Release The Bats Festival in October 2013 (featuring the Scientists), ‘Kim + Leanne’ release their first 7”single ‘Freudian Slippers’. The album TRUE WEST is slated for release in early 2014.
The first single "Freudian Slippers" is a monstrously heavy slab of sonic soul punk rock and is sung from the point of view of a poor hapless fellow who has made the realisation that his girlfriend is an amateur shrink.
