Astroblaster is a perfect songof this I am quite confident.

Great classic Acid/IDM compilation. "On The Romance Tip" is one of the best electronic track I've ever heard, but there are plenty of awesome sounds & rythms in this release. A must have !

after not playing the records for a very long time, i cleaned them thoroughly several times with an okki nokki and the regular cleaning fluid. the vinyl still looks foggy but plays perfectly fine.

Essential Aphex release if you don't own the joyrex ep's. As everyone says the represses are likely to be in better condition due to the non plastic sleeves. I've got the 2007 version and it's one of my prized records. Cordialatron is so beautiful. Get it if you can.

Absolutely one of the best releases by Richard D James - His heavy sounds were so rePhreshing in the early 90's - and now. Unfortunately the original vinyl pressing was housed in a clear sleeve pack that leaves a "cloudy" film onto the vinyl. I've rarely played mine since learning this and removed the vinyl from the original sleeves as I would recommend to anyone who owns the original vinyl pressing.----- Question: has anyone played the stained vinyl a few times and found any improvement either visually or audibly once the needle has glided through the groves - thus likely wearing off some of the stain (for the better)? Has anyone tried carefully cleaning the vinyl beyond standard record cleaner solutions in order to clean the residue? Curious about any and all experiences related to the original pressing and success or horror stories from trying to clean it up some. Thanks.

i cleaned the records with an okki nokki and the regular cleaning fluid before playing them. the surface still looks foggy but the records sound absolutely fine

RDJ is capable of so many varying styles that are all original to him, and him alone. He can make music that will allow you to drift off to other worlds, laugh your ass off from absurd musical gestures and dance till you drop with hard acid and drill and bass grindage. But this compilation stands out and is, IMHO, the absolute best of his musical output. I've been listening to this collection of EPs for almost 20 years now, and it does not get old or less entertaining. I still hold hope that he will release music that hearkens back to this era of melt your face off acid. Thank you Richard, for making me a dreamer of dreams.

complete with surface noise due to the plastic sleeves, which leave a mat foggy film on the records during storage- only the area on 2 sides where the sticker was affixed don't have the 'fog'
Whiteflame
This is really good at 33 1/3, regardless of the artist's intentions.

When I listen at track E1 containing this orgasmic female voice sample, it sounds much better at 45 RPM than 33 :)But I agree the fact that some of the tracks on this compilation can be played at 33 RPM.
OCARO
Totally. I'm not sure I've ever played it at 45RPM.
Kit
i read in an interview he doesn't really intend his tracks to be played at any particular speed.

The vinyl sleeve destroys the vinyl record. It's true, the records are very cloudy. And if you touch them in the places where the vinyl was in contact the grooves feel like the difference between a chef and butter knife. I got it in 1998 played it once and now it's garbage, save the sleeve. Luckily Analord came in non-vinyl sleeves from Forced Exposure.

I've owned this since it was re-released in 2002, ordered directly from Warp. It's an awesome example of the harsher side of the Richard D James spectrum. For people who have already passed the initiation of albums like "Come To Daddy", "...I Care Because You Do", and even some of the Analord series. The labels on them say they're supposed to be played at 45rpm. Although lately I've been digging it at 33rpm with my sub up at 75% of volume. It gives it a more ominous feel. Like some sort of acid dub monstrosity.

Like some sort of acid dub monstrosity. Funny! I've always played them on 33rpm as well. They sounded perfect to me that way, especially my favourite track "Italic Eyeball", the one with the ghostly voices. But I can asure you they are meant to be played at 45rpm as written on the labels, because my friend bought a cd version of the album, after we'd had a stoner record listening session. Surely you can imagine how disappointed he was hearing the cd with no option of pitching it down - and my embarrassment over having been listening to these records for years at a wrong speed. But the damage is done, I will never be able to listen to them again at correct rpm.Guess I just love acid dub monstrosity!

after 10 years of owning this triple pack, my records have this foggy film all over them now and have hiss from the plastic jackets. Its best to put them in inner sleeves or they will be ruined.
Iesha
I just checked my set, which was probably only played once or twice ever, and the records are ruined. It's obviously the PVC sleeves. The same thing happened with my Metalheadz box which holds the 5 records in PVC sleeves. Such a bummer. WARNING: Remove any records held in PVC sleeves and store in paper as it is only a matter of time before your records are ruined.
Risinal
Yeah it seems the 1st press fold-out pvc sleeve maybe reacted badly with the lacquer on the vinyls causing all the records to develop a strange matt sheen pattern and excess surface noise no matter how otherwise well kept. I re-bought the set when they came out in regular paper sleeves and of course that pressing sounds immaculate so who gives a shite after all this time....
Silvermaster
Yes, I got that problem ass well....shame....such great music and then poor quality vinyl :(Even the youtube version shown here has a better quality.
Quemal
Its missing untitled r2d2 and popcorn from the vinyls
Risky Strong Dromedary
z4g5r This and it also has Humanoid Must Not Escape, which wasn't on any previous Caustic Window vinyls. not true it was on Joyrex J9i along with Fantasia

Mr.jeka
coming from someone who quite appreciates abrasive noise, this is one of the coolest RDJ finds. I just recently happened upon this and man, he can make your ears bleed like the best of them! ;)the acid on these tracks is amazing, and the beats are like plummoling tree trunks pounding your skull.definitally not for those interested in his more ambient 'prettier' stuff. don't get me wrong i love all of his music, i just happen to have a soft spot for good noisey tracks. in conclusion, if you want a hardcore dance record that will knock you on your ass, you're in the right place. no drugs required. when you're through with this, all the acid will have melted your face off already.

I have to say that this was one of the most dissapointing releases I have ever encountered from the man known as "Aphex Twin", Richard D. James. It features a lot of hardcore techno, repetition, and only a few ambient pieces. Arguably the great ambient tracks make up for the mediocre harder tracks, but the musical coherence of the album is just abominable. Nowhere near the genius that Aphex Twin displays consistently on his other releases.
Original
Whaat I love the breakcore and breakbeat caustic window does. I enjoy his soft stuff but the intense ones are legit!
Budar
Classic Richard D. James! No matter if you like "hard" electronic music or not, this album is worth owning. Some will find some of the tracks to be overly repetitive ("We are the Music Makers [Hardcore Mix]" and "The Garden Of Linmiri" particulary), but superb tracks like "On The Romance Tip", "Astroblaster", and the short-but-cute "Pigeon Street" make up for those.
OTANO
If you like dark and disturbing, it's worth acquiring this album solely for the track, "Garden of Linmiri". Technohead-speed rough (and I mean rough) beats underlaid with a creepy discordant background drone interspersed with violent white noise blips (to remind you that you're alive!). Some garden...
Cia
i remember that track being in a cool pirelli advert with carl lewis running around barefoot in new york...

Release for die-hard fans first. Redefined the words harsh and weird in 1992. For sure one of Richard D. James'lesser known works. Originally released on Rephlex as Joyrex J4 (CAT004), J5 (CAT005) and J9 (CAT009). There's a bit of everything here really. CAT005 was the most melodic (beautiful) of the three. CAT004 also features some slower tracks (though nothing here with the quality of Selected Ambient Works Vol.I). CAT009 is pure acidstyle hardcore but unfortunately a bit overly repetitive for my taste. If you're looking for more records in this style (with a somewhat similar feel), check out Frost Jockey's 'Burgundi Trax vol I& II' on Planet µ or Mike Paradinas' earlier work ('Bluff Limbo' in particular if you like chainsaws through your speakers!). For those of you owning the Rephlex-reissue of this material, I would advise to get those vinyls out of those plastic sleeves ASAP!!! Seems like the plastic starts interacting with the vinyl in a nasty chemical way that could (and will!) damage your records as far as I can tell!! No good reason to let thát happen, now is there?
