Carlos Kleiber has conducted Beethoven's 'Pastoral' only once in his carrer, performing it with the Bavarian State Orchestra on November 7th, 1983. As a result, this live recording is a genuine rarity.
Although every concert given by the Bavarian State Orchestra is recorded live and the recording preserved on tape in the orchestra's archive, it transpired that of all the tapes in its possession, this particular one had deteriorated during its long period in storage. Although the piece was still recognizable, the whole of the stereophonic sound and the atmosphere were lost.
Fortunately, there was in addition to this damaged master tape an audio cassette that had been made during the concert for Kleiber's son. Much to the amazement of the sound engineer, this old cassette turned out to have survived the two intervening decades far better than the carefully stored master copy.
With a good deal of patience and musical sensitivity the sound engineer Christoph Stickel succeeded in conjuring the present CD out of this cassette. The result is not, of course, noiseless Dolby surround sound, but a document that provides an accurate and authentic reflection of the special musical athmosphere of this concert and the vitality of Kleiber's reading.
