Review from The Sound Project - 20/04/2012Evans the Death are a five-piece from London who have burst on to the indie-pop scene over the past couple of years. It didn't take long before they signed to indie label Fortuna POP!A little over twelve months has past from then until the release of this, their self-titled debut. It's got all the trademarks of their sound, albeit here it sounds a lot cleaner than in the live shows. The writer/singer combination between Dan Moss and Katherine Whittaker is really what makes this whole thing work. The two seem to have a connection that enables Whittaker to perform Moss' songs with ease. The music itself has a bit of a new wave/c86 sound about it at times, at others it's pure punk-pop - the punk philosophy is evident in the mere 30 minute running time.Opener 'Bo Diddley' is fast-paced guitar-pop, in the same vein as their Fortuna POP! debut single, 'Threads', which is also included here.'Telling' lies is pure indie-pop, with Whittaker's vocal conjuring a sound somewhere between Chrissie Hynde and Debbie Harry. The same cane be said of 'Sleeping Song', which is the album's most uplifting moment - not that this is an album of downers. On the contrary. If this record were a season it'd be summer. Early summer.True, this album isn't perfect, at times the production is a bit too polished and you do long for a bit of extra 'fuzz', at other times you feel like the songs could maybe develop further. But on the other side, this is still miles better than most of the other debuts records out there.Key song: Telling Lies
