Does anyone know if there is any difference between the remastered versions? As far as I can tell they seem to be re-releases of the Substrata2 version of 2001, but I haven't seen any info to suggest otherwise

stands the test of time and still one of the best ambient albums ever made. so many memories attached to this.

the 2017 pressing is nothing short of a masterpiece, not a single crackle, pop or whatever defect from a1 till the very end - i am impressed. the same plant should reissue S.A.W II ;)
SARAND
Copies still available at Juno, for anyone in the UK this is by far the cheapest it's available for online. https://www.juno.co.uk/products/biosphere-substrata/442234-01/

all three of my copies are cut and pressed flawlessly, zero noise, no pops, no crackle, a bit like the mid 1994 Cro2 tape with the bonus of dolby B (which was unnecessary for actual BASF chromedioxide anyway ;) we ve sold about 20 copies (taken from 3 different batches) of this and everybody was stunned by the signal to noise ratio, and it's hard to imagine a material that is more demanding than low-mid driven ambiences. get your facts straight, it's not the pressing plant that is responsible for your problems, it's obviously a matter of the final product mishandling.

Saw these comments after ordering a copy, I hope I get lucky
Darkraven
Less surface noise than most new vinyl I buy, I would say my 2017 pressing is very good. Very centered pressing too.
Ffleg
Very crackly, Side C has a really nasty pop, and Side D is unlistenable. The packaging and music itself is great though.

When it came to keeping the spirit of ambient/techno alive, Biosphere came to the rescue. In a time of TripHop/Jungle/DnB being in vogue, Geir Jenssen didn't yield a centimeter, he produced an even more chilling masterpiece than Patashnik, with Substrata. And for the budding arctic botanist, it is probably interesting that these get a mention: Poa Alpina, Kobresia, Antennaria, Uva-Ursi, Silene

I bought late repress (January'17) expecting a superior ambient sound but once I put vinyls on turntable, I find myself saddened. Some turbulence and annoying noise (due, in part, to a scratch in side A of my copy) in every of the four sides, regardless how clean the surface was. I wrote my webshop to comment these issues and they have contacted the distributor in the same way. Let's see if they give a proper response...

?!! See my comment below, the exact same thing!!Biosphere - Substrata — zevulon April 13, 2016Comment#2 Got a second copy from the shop - no scratch, and, there are no disturbances at all! Guess it isn't the whole batch that has been compromised, but my first copy was really, really bad - not just the factorty/packaging scratch (the record was sealed, so it must have happened during production)-zevulonBiosphere - Substrata — zevulon March 15, 2016 Comment#1Mine has extensive disturbances, the kind you usually hear when the (..never made a vinyl myself) cut/mother hasn't been bathed/produced properly. Subtle, but ALL THE TIME! This is very common these days with no quality check to bother ( >> Nathan Fake - Steam Days ).On my copy it is every now and then for the full A and B side. AND! To make things worse, there was a big deep 1 cm scratch on the A side!I didn't even bother about the second disc.Ps. The Nathan Fake release seems to be ALL copies, so, yeah, vinyl is a volatile business these days. Glad we both got good copies in the end!!

Finally I got the replacement copy and now the defect was gone and the the sound is pretty quiet, maybe not perfect but so good and fully enjoyable indeed. Very happy with the excellent service provided by the Boomkat guys (and with the further understanding of the label itself).

You can still buy it here: https://biosphere.bandcamp.com/album/substrata-with-bonus-album"shipping out on or around January 20, 2017"

This needs a new reissue release doesn't it? The 2011 version still is out there.

Average release. I dont understand all the hype on here. Quality pressing but nothing special with the production.

One of best ambient albums ever ... Helped me many times ...

How is the pressing of the 2015 re-issue? Surface noises? Sound quality? Thank you!

Mines clean. I plan to keep it that way ????????????
Kelenn
In my opinion could be better. Sound is shallow, but it is only my opinion. Ive never heard first pressing.
AfinaS
Outstanding music gets the mastering it deserves. The continuous mix makes for a perfectly smooth vinyl. Essential.
Kazimi
Possibly the best ambient album ever released. Powerful music. Timeless, beautiful and evocative.
Brakree
Fantastic album!
Cemav
YES, a reissue!

Thank you for letting me know. I´ve just ordered the vinyl version. One of my long time listening companion albums and I´ve been trying to resist buying the vinyl version for ages and occasionally look here to see if I can still resist buying one.

This is probably the ambient album I listened most and still every time I press play I continue to be totally absorbed by the magnificent soundscapes composed by Geir Jenssen. Electronic music ages very fast, but it is not the case of this album released almost twenty years ago that still sounds fresh and contemporary. This summer I'll go to Norway on holiday and I look forward to experience this album while I drive through the fjords!!
