One could buy this as a jazz record and be delighted with the purchase. Iva Bittova is not a jazz singer but her vocals, with or without words, just happen to be great jazz. The themes are all traditional Moravian music or Janacek's workings of it. Because Moravian music is inherently modal, the music can slip effortlessly between the tradition and the jazz. This, in turn, is said to have something to do with Moravians drinking wine, not beer like western Czechs. Why not explore this interesting theory whilst listening?
