I'm surprised by all the negative reviews; mine sounds pretty damn good! Sure, it would've been nice if there were printed sleeves instead of plain black poly sleeves in the box (but at least they are poly lined!). And sure, the booklet is a little thin, but the music is incredible, the presentation is tasteful, the vinyl is flat and (mostly) silent and you get to own three double albums collected in a relatively compact and convenient box! I think the original price was steep but the prices currently going on discogs seem about right I think...
LiTTLe_NiGGa_in_THE_СribE
For a premium release like Lord of the Rings you expect premium quality of the merchandise you buy, ar least quality that matches the amound paid for the product.I found this boxset rather cheap in appearance. This is just a box with 6 LPs in it, housed in black anti-static innersleeves. There is a booklet with some background on the recordings. I found this very minimal. The quality of the pressing is not very good. Some sides were very noisy, like they were regularly played since the 70s.. but these I bought on the day of release. Crackles, sometimes all over a side (like the whole side D, which contains the most wonderful music if you'd ask me). Pops on some parts.. but also some sides that were really clean.Makes me hope that mine waa juat a bad one in the batch. Made me get the Complete Recordings of each film on vinyl. On which I hoped that they might be of a better quality since they were really limited and expensive(app 200 eu). But no, the total (booklet, box, map of middle earth) by appearance was way better and more premium, but the coloured vinyl they pressed that on isn't very clean either. So or they release these just to collect and not actually play and price them for top dollar because the nuts will get them anyway? (Aint that just like me?) Or they really dont know what they are putting out there? Best music for your money is just getting the Complete Recordings on CD. They sound marvellous; the orchestra comes to life.. there are layers, depths.. more colour.. it was like i never heard those pieces before. I am no CD man, these 3 soundtracks (and the Hobbit 3x) are litteraly the 6 only CDs I own.
Eseve
So sad to read this, I was hoping they would have improved the pressing quality after all the mixed reactions to the three complete recordings sets... Thanks for your review, prevents me from buying something I would probably have regretted getting in the end!
Zulkigis
There seems to be some confusion as to what this box set contains. Let me try to help:This release is not a box set of the three "Complete Scores" vinyl sets that were released seperately. Instead, this is the original highlight versions of the three movies scores that were originally released as single CDs during the original theatrical releases of the three films. There are 2 records for each film. Aprox. 80 mins. for each score.
Isha
How about the quality of the pressing? does it sound good? I'm thinking of buying it, would love to know more about the sound quality of them.
Drelahuginn
That seems to be the case. This is not numbered, so I would think that this is pretty much a box set for those who didn't get the 3 limited sets.
fetish
That's the helpful detail: "this is the original highlight versions of the three movies scores that were originally released as single CDs".
Brajind
I did not compare tracklisting now, but what or is there a difference to the other "Complete Recordings" boxes (despite that this is the summary of all 3)?Am glad that this came after the complete boxes and not 1 year before..!
BlessСhild
They renamed the pieces for the Complete Recordings of each title. Like 'The Breaking of the Fellowship' they cut into 3 or 4 parts and May It Be featuing Enya inbetween, just before the vocal part of The Breaking of the Fellowship. You can say that the big themes and key melodies are included in the 6lp box. You won't miss all the extras either, since what you probably came for is included in this set. So everyhing on this set is on the Complete Recordings, be it in slight different appearance.
BORZOTA
I see. I don't really know the soundtrack all that well. I have been buying these mostly for my wife. I ended up buying this anyway. Thanks for the info!
Diab
Well, this is difficult to prove and you would have to make a survey :)But when I look at "The Motion Picture ST" (MP) track L3 "Into the West" which is 5:47 and compare with "The Complete Recordings" (CR) L2 "Days of the Ring" with 11:10 it (Into the West) has to be included because the featuring role is in both. The same with K4 on MP "The end of all things" 5:12 length is worked in on CR track K1 "The fellowship reunited" with a lenth of 12:18! Other track like "Minas Morgul" on MP track I6 has to be on CR maybe within track E1 "The parting of Sam and Frodo" or the next one... Etcetcetc. However, I assume that the COMPLETE score is complete and must have everything what is in the Motion Pic Soundtrack... But due to different length and different positions in the film have different names...
*Nameless*
Maybe I'm not looking right, but I don't see many that match exact titles between the Complete Recordings and this?
breakingthesystem
I very briefly "checked" The Return Of the King and I think that the "shorter" versions from "The Motion Picture Trilogy Soundtrack" are in the complete recordings in longer versions... But if this is for each track..?
Zacki
I did a quick scan of the other box sets and it looks like none of the tracks from those are in this set. I wasn't planning on there being a fourth box set that I would have to buy, but here I am.
