Mitropoulos was known to American audiences as a purveyor of fiery XX century music, but he was also one of the best opera conductors of the 50s. His sparkling 1956 recording in Salzburg is probably the reference for Don Giovanni - no less. Like the best opera recordings, this Symphonie Fantastique, has a clear emotional arc connecting the five scenes: from the very restrained, almost classical Reveries to the full-on romantic Sabbath we feel the story unfolding. Strong playing from NYPO and the good quality sound add to the enjoyment.
