Tindersticks are a total one off. Unique. They often got termed an 'indie' band by lazy journalists but their sound bears no relation to the sea of banality and conformity that makes up most of the indie scene. No other band could take jazz, chamber music, sweeping orchestral arrangements, dense melodicism, Leonard Cohen melancholy and weave it into a meaningful sound. They have had a cult following for about 20 years but have never been household names. Households are missing out. The first time I heard them was on the third disk of Laurent Garnier's Excess Baggage mix. Stuart Staple's vocal style is one of the most recognisable in modern music and worked well amongst weird and wonderful esoterica of that mix. The Something Rain is about their 9th studio album and is a good representation of what they are all about musically. It's not the best of their albums that I own but still has an enormous amount of character. Mostly up-beat and pretty propulsive in places, hell you could even have a go at dancing to some of it. One of the UK's finest bands, they continue to deliver beautiful and memorable music.
