i havent actually listened to this despite being aware of it for a few a years.always drawn by the sleeve art and its referencing of platonic philosophy, the rational (natural) mind and the cycle of generation. i am intrigued if this is expressed through the music, if this is the case it would be a very profound recording

Now we dive deeply into the gently flowing waves of Brazilian soulfunk! Tim Maia is some kind of a legend in his field and his “Racional” album from 1975 a one of a kind steaming effort even in its most gentle moments. Lush string arrangements embrace deep and complex instrumental patterns rooted in grooves that reach beyond your consciousness and grab you by your instincts with their sensual expression. Punchy vocals courtesy of the master himself ride on top of the non stop flow of beats and harmonies just to straightly hit your soul and set fire to your spirit. The vocals are definitely the icing on the cake here, mostly sung in Brazilian Portuguese language with a few turns into fluent English free of any accent. The one or another a-capella piece shows the true talent of Tim Maia who feels best in the lower pitches. He is indeed one of these soul masters with a commanding lower harmonic that will make you as the listener follow and shake your hips and booty to the ever pulsating rhythm. It is indeed a great idea to include a few softer tracks so you may breathe awhile before the heat swallows you once more. There is a beautiful lead guitar on most of the groovier pieces with a fuzzy character played quite wild and flashy. All in all the musicians backing up Master Tim belong to the top elite of Brazilian funk, soul and rock, despite the fact I am unaware of their identity. You can feel it from the smooth and slick flow of their parts. This outstanding record will definitely appeal to fans of 1970s funk and soul music that is always on the verge of stepping into the field of early disco music but maintains an atmosphere of small smoke filled bars and clubs. The Latin influence is quite evident due to the origin of the band but Tim Maia leaves no doubt that it is only an additional swab of color just like the restrained elements of jazz and fusion music. When you’re in a joyful mood, throw this goodie into your player or onto your turntable and let the groove put you into a state of trance.
