A concerto for two timpanists and orchestra is most unusual and makes a nice change. However, to me, the cello concerto alone makes it worth buying this CD, possibly one of Julian Lloyd Webber's finest recordings. Commissioned by William and Rebecca Krueger for cellist Julian Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday, it premiered on October 21st, 2001 at Beijing Music Festival with Julian Lloyd Webber and the China Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yu Long.On this CD it is performed by Julian with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gerard Schwarz. The music is vital and fresh, it uses the full range of the cello, it can be technically very challenging at times, like in the opening cadenza, very lyrical and energetic at other times, and becomes almost trance-like serenity in the slow movement. All these different aspects of the music combine together to create and unusual and exciting new experience. Try it!
