Lailace
I don’t know why I take so many hits because I break albums apart, separating what I feel is good from what is filler. I don’t know why artists don’t consult some of their fans before they drop the dime. I know that artists like to change and progress, and I support that, but man, sometimes they just put out filler to make a full length album when an EP would make me smile all the more.“Devils & Dust” gets a 5 from me because five of the songs are SO strong they chill me to the bone, evoke memories from my past, fire me up, spin me around and set me to dancing. Bruce has filled these five songs with more country and folk strumming, violins and the like then ever before. He hasn’t lost his ability to tell a story, and feels no need to shout it out here, and he doesn’t have to, to get these stories across. They’re OUTSTANDING.‘Devils & Dust’ takes me back to Vietnam, I get cold chills in my knees and elbows remembering how far from home I was, and wondering if anyone even knew I was out there anymore. It’s a very quiet song, with quite strumming, that slowly builds, then trails off to nowhere. Just overwhelming.‘All The Way Home’ is a nice rocker, like Bruce unplugged. It’s got the most mysterious electric guitar work swirling in the background that overlaps his voice at points, denoting the confusion and frustration he’s feeling for the girl. Again, this song builds slowly and becomes so thick and rich with texture, all to a steady simple drum beat, then Bruce hits you with some YEP’s that travel right up and down your spin. PERFECT.‘Long Time Commin’ will make you cry. It’s about a man dropping his work, putting on some new cloths and dancing in the streets. But it’s more then that it’s all a metaphor, perhaps a sad one ... but I’ll leave you to put it together. I don’t usually do this but here are the lyrics... Out where the creek turn shallow and sandyAnd the moon comes skimmin' away the starsWhen the mesquite comes rushin' over the hilltopsStraight into my armsStraight into my armsI'm ridin' hard carryin' a cache of rosesA fresh map that I madeNow I'm gonna get birth naked and bury my old soulAnd dance on it's graveAnd dance on it's graveIt's been a long time comin', my dearIt's been a long time comin', but now it's hereAnd now it's hereWell my daddy he was just a strangerLived in a hotel downtownWell when I was a kid he was just somebodySomebody I'd see aroundSomebody I'd see aroundWell now down below and pullin' on my shirtYeah I got some kids of my ownWell if I had one wish for you in this god forsaken world, kidIt'd be that your mistakes will be your ownThat your sins will be your ownIt's been a long time comin', my dearIt's been a long time comin', but now it's hereAnd now it's here(Whoaaa)Out 'neath the arms of CassiopeiaWhere the sword of Orion sweepsIt's me and you, Rosie, cracklin' like crossed wiresAnd you breathin' in your sleepAnd you breathin' in your sleepWell there's just a spark of a campfire left burnin'Two kids in a sleeping bag besideReach 'neath your shirt, put my hands across your belly and feelAnother one kickin' insideAnd I ain't gonna fuck it up this timeIt's been a long time comin', my dearIt's been a long time comin', but now it's hereIt's been a long time comin', my dearIt's been a long time comin', but now it's here(Whoaaa)This song is one of Bruce’s finest ever.‘Maria’s Bed’ is another choice piece of music from the man. It’s got a rolling beat and an even more mysterious vocal. The backing vocals are front and center when they come in, accenting an already beautiful song. Again this song builds slowly with the instruments but his voices NEVER rises, even when the guitars, drums and background vocals are driving hard. Bruce does some perfect chord changes with his voice that will knock you down and pick you back up.‘All I’m Thinkin’ About’ rolls and rolls and rolls, gets under your skin, slides around inside of your soul, and flies out your mouth before you realize that you’re singing right out loud. Everything a fine finger popping song should be.You will not be disappointed with your adventure into these numbers. I’M DANCING NOW, OH YES, I’M SINGING ... ”all I’m thinking about is you baby ...”Review by Jenell Kesler
