The official story is Games Workshop wouldn't renew the artwork license. I suspect Earache didn't want to pay what Games wanted, seeing as GW became so huge.

Another Earache FDR home run. Only gripe is I wished it used the original cover art, other than that you can't go wrong. Like all the other FDR releases this sounds awesome.

the FDR 2017 disc, they leave to be desired.I bought them because they reported that the art was the same as the first edition and it is not like that. It does not bring books, the colors are different.The sound of the disc shows a remastered change. They do not sound bad, but there is something strange.

The 2017 US FDR vinyl sounds awesome, I just recently bought mine and compared to the original cd I have from 1989 this vinyl blows it away! I can finally hear all the nuances of guitar and drum sounds that I could not hear on my cd. Only thing I prefer on the original is the artwork. I'm not saying the new artwork is bad, because it's not, but the original artwork is one of my favorites of all time so I really do miss it and wish it was still around because I would have loved to have it on the vinyl jacket nice and big in all its glory. Anyways, musically I think this is one of the best old school death metal albums ever (definitely top 20) and was the album that not only gave Bolt Thrower its true identity in a sea of death metal bands but was also the album where everyone in the scene had to take notice of just how big of a beast this band was becoming. Grade A death metal!

Regarding the 2017 Earache pressing "full dynamic range - pressed from original tapes". Don't get too excited. Sounds way more bright/trebly and definitely lacks the " punch" and presence of the original pressing. Its not horrible, but if you can afford it I would save your $ for the original (WAY better art and packaging, too)

Is your assessment of the sound a criticism of the FDR remaster or that particular pressing? I'm comparing a first pressing vinyl rip (obviously not ideal but I don't have access to the original) and a FLAC CD rip of the FDR remaster and I think the latter sounds better hands down. I'd agree that it's more bright, but by no means problematically so. If anything I'd describe the original as being a bit dark (admittedly this could be down to this cart used to rip). The texture of the guitar comes through so much better in the remaster, and the image sounds wider in general. Not hearing any perceived loss of punch, either.I agree that the original packaging and artwork is amazing, but you can get this newer vinyl for a mere fraction of the price of the NM original with all inserts, and considering I prefer this master it seems like a very worthy trade-off.
