Recorded in 1981, Collection 4 is a reflection of Masami Akita's early creations as Merzbow. The tracks on this release feature a free improvisation approach with traditional instruments rather than his later electronic feedback/distortion work. This work more closely resembles something in the vein of later AMM, albeit with far less utilization of silence and space. The comparison is admittedly lazy and isn't completely appropriate, but the instrumentation of piano, prepared guitar, percussion and electronics makes for an easy point of reference and isn't TOO far off for most of the tracks. However, I don't wish to compare the quality of this release to the aforementioned group. And releases like Ammmusic and more so The Crypt - 12th June 1968 have MUCH harsher and noisier moments.Nothing featured here is essential in my point of view, but certainly an interesting release for the historically perceptive based fans of Merzbow and improvisation.
