'Johnny Horse' doses out fuzzy and scratchy guitars, plucked guitar with softly sung vocals, dense soundscapes and a whole lot of Hex. Heazlewood, Sebadoh, Peter Gutteridge can be heard on the surface of songs if you like, but never outshine the uniqueness of Mike and his home-recorded, demo-like sounds. Magic not only in name.There is something enchanting to be found in all 24 songs. The albums unfocused track list, rambling from the gentle and huskily-sung 'Disappear' to the experimental 'Nizzybobbins', which could easily fit into an early Pavement release, is part of Mike's free-wheeling charm here. You can see it right down to the sketched, smiling horse on the cover art.
