While we may never know what a finished Shell Shock album would've looked like, it's worth noting that the following titles (with authorship credited to The Turtles as a group) were copyrighted in July/August 1971.John's MedleyCan I Go On?I've Been Gone Too LongKathleen's BrainLet's Pack and Beat ItMarmendy HillOn the InsideSaturday MovieStrange GirlYou Want To Be a Woman

Shell Shock was the working title for the 'Turtle Soup' follow up album. The Turtles were in dire straits when they started recording sessions. Their previous album, a very good one, had not made any impression, the singles all had flopped. Their record company, White Whale, was in financial trouble. To generate some cash flow they ordered the group to record Judy Sills' composition 'Lady-O' as a single, hoping that it would climb the charts. It didn't. Then White Whale took 'Who Would Ever Think That I Would Marry Margaret' from the shelf and released the single, which to the relieve of the group, ho hated the song, bombed spectacularly. White Whale went into bankrupty and Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman got a phone call from Frank Zappa. If they wanted to join his latest Mothers' line up. That was the end of The Turtles, and the work on 'Shell Shock' was abandoned.Rhino acquired the rights to The Turtles catalogue, including loads of tapes with unreleased tracks. And of course, the unfinished 'Shell Shock' album. Now what is presented here is as close as it gets. There's a 'Turtle Soup' outtake on this album that wasn't intended for 'Shell Shock'. The same goes for the hilarious 'Gas Money', the syrupy 'Lady-O' and the much hated 'Who Would Ever Think That I Would Marry Margaret'. But the rest was recorded for possible inclusion on Shell Shock and gives us a glimpse of where the group could have gone if the stars had just been a bit more in their favor.

"Gas Money" was the Jan & Arnie 1958 follow-up to"Jennie Lee". (Pre Jan & Dean)
