Quite literally one of the darkest, most mesmerizing, abstract trance mix compilations that I have ever stumbled across in my many years of listening to trance. CD1 mixed by DJ Dede is nothing short of excellent! Cass & Slide's Opera sets the tone immediately, and one is treated to both the Excession Mix & The Phantoms Only Mix back to back! Taylor's Xenophobe twists things up a notch, introduces a less predictable, almost "crazy" vibe. What's not to like! My favorite tune on CD1 would have to be Mara's Remix of You Won't See Me Cry (which I must admit turned me off completely to the version found on Armin's Boundaries Of Imagination). The driving bass, electric sweeps, accompanied by a sound reminiscent of a large ship's fog horn! I could write a paragraph about each track on CD1 - it's that good (not sure where the avg 3.7 rating comes from, but to each their own).DJ Micha's CD2 on the other hand is an entirely different animal. The darkness, mystery, and sinister elements found within CD1 are still present, but in a much different, more abstract form. A new element is also introduced. Chaos. CD2 is absolutely chaotic, but at the same time, it is calculated. It's as if you are walking though an electric jungle, with pulsating lights in the sky, and the sound of robotic swamp animals surround you left and right - shrouded in the darkness of the night. Come Element's - Transform, it's as if you are greeted by the inhabitants of this world - and just like that, you're on your own again. Stumbling through the Abyss, surrounded by foreign creatures that could not possibly be attributed to anything on earth! The title of this compilation could not be more relevant. As for the mixing? In my opinion it is flawless. Dede and Micha both employ skillful transitions, Micha's seeming a bit more complex due to the more abstract nature of the tracks, but nonetheless a stellar performance by Dede as well. A nice gritty factor indicative of a vinyl mix is present as well!5/5 - One of the few compilations truly able to take me to another world, over and over again.
Wat!?
Great review of this gem, I couldn’t agree more. Still listen to it, 17 years after I bought it, and it still sounds fresh or maybe ”timeless” is the more accurate word. A real classic in my eyes and ears. 5/5.
