Released in 2004, this remains a somewhat obscure album. Didn't really chart at the time and the CD today can be found for next to nothing. Nevertheless, it is a striking example of the American Fingerstyle guitar that we've become so familiar with via the Fahey's, Leo's, and Lang's of the past. Beautifully slow-rolling tunes like "There Is No Joy..." and "Billy Bowlegs Blues" lap at your ears like the current of an immense river - full of power, but reticent beneath their calm surface. Others like "Smylax" are complex as they are concise. And then tracks like "Chasleen, You Gotta Run To Catch That Train" and "The Devil's Horse" are given enough time to unfold with the peaks and valleys of a man truly locked in conversation with his instrument. I've got a feeling that because it was never released on vinyl, this album hasn't even registered among most of the record-buying crowd that feverishly collects any remnant of Jack Rose, James Blackshaw, Rick Bishop, Basho-Jungans, etc., which is too bad. Worth checking out at any rate, so grab one from Soft Abuse on the cheap.
