The Rolling Stones' 1968 promotional video for "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and the cover photography of the 7" single capture a style and aesthetic that is perfect for this essential rock song. It is quite simply the definitive measuring stick by which I measure all other rock bands. This song is the peak of an extraordinary moment of a band that continues to shine and inspire.

I have a DJ copy that was given to me by the Jukebox man, while he was installing new discs in Pa., Oct. 1968. It has the black star in the upper left, "A" side, above 'Gideon Music". Also, Lower left "A" side says, 'Promotional" while the lower right side says, "Not For Sale".(Different from all others I've seen). Cat. No. on right side says 45-908-DJ. $now on e-bay.

IT'S ALL ABOUT CHILD OF THE MOON ...The delicious Child Of The Moon, disowned by it’s parents, and rejected by all but the most ardent of the psychedelic faithful, stood less like a beacon, and more like the last dangling silver thread of the mind expansive acid drenched 60’s ... that once pulled, ushered in a more gritty and less self-reflective era; not only for The Stones, but for music in general. While it should have, Child Of The Moon never saw the light of day until it was released as the B Side for Jumpin’ Jack Flash, where in it’s mysterious way, connected both the past, the present, and the low-fi droning that was waiting around the corner, just out of sight. At this point in time, there is no way to justify Child Of The Moon not being the centerpiece for Their Satanic Majesties Request, where this hauntingly dark invocational poem [dedicated to Marrianne Faithful] could not only have opened TSMR, but closed it as a reprise, in much the same manner as The Beatles had done with Sgt. Pepper, and without a doubt, made TSMR the most influential psychedelic album of all time. The song is both lush and exotic, lovingly held in time by the drumming of Charlie Watts, while Keith Richards’ guitar and the hypnotic sax played by Brian Jones, drift in a trancelike dance, reminiscent of an LSD trip’s peak, and all moved along by Wyman’s bass line and Jagger’s lyrical presentation. Why The Rolling Stones should want, or desire to dissociated themselves from their euphoric dialectic psychedelic brilliance is beyond me, because TSMR can certainly stand toe to toe with anything released during that flower power era. Yet, perhaps The Stones sensed that the tides and ideals of the 60’s were nothing more than mythology even as they’d begin, leaving Child Of The Moon as their last splendid gift, as the decade weaned, and most of us, incomprehensibly morphed into someone else.Review by Jenell Kesler

Keith Richards' open tuning leads to an incredible rock riff. "Jumpin' Jack Flash" is a 'gas'. Of course, "Satisfaction" is the Stones' anthem, but "Jumpin' Jack Flash" contains much more energy. Plus, the refrain "Jumpin' Jack Flash, it's a gas, gas, gas" allows Mick to cleverly insert the word "shit" into a song without raising any eyebrows. A neat little trick."Child of the Moon" is yet another underrated b-side for the Stones. It sounds to me like a re-working of Lennon's "Rain". "Jumpin' Jack Flash" is another song which resides in Overplay Hell, but still sounds magnificent.
