Isn’t it always a bit nice to listen to an album that is a bit sad, but not childishly depressing, or about loneliness, but not 14 year old girl loneliness, and a bit angry, but not long-haired teenage punk angry. Teddy Thompson’s album is appropriately, maturely, angsty. My favorite song is “What’s This?!!”, a song about a person being surprised that they are happy.“What's this, what's this, am I happy or somethingOh shit, oh shit, am I happy or somethingIs it you, Is it me, is it us, is it "we"Uh oh!” Which soon turns to, “And the voices in my head come nowSaying this'll never work, get outAnd the voices in my head are loudSaying this'll never work get outI DON'T WANNA HEAR IT!” I also highly recommend “Don’t Know What I Was Thinking” to a person with identical taste as myself. And “Can’t Sing Straight” reminds me of Morphine. The band, not the drug, it in no way reminds me of the drug. Not that I would know.
