one of the most beautiful emotionally charged electronic albums i've ever come across. So unique in its sound, drenched in emotion. 20/10. would listen again. and again. and again. and again.

John Beltran prooves once more his undeniable hability to create a soulful and emotional Techno journey on "The Cry" LP, alternating straight and break beats with beautiful melodies and synthesized chords. The author is certainly not a newbie, as he has been on the road since the very early nineties with a very mature musical perspective (just take a look at his "Aquatic" EP as Placid Angles with Mark Wilson A.K.A. Open House). "The Cry" gives the youngsters not only the idea that Techno can have chords and melodies, but also that it can have breakbeats or even a slow mood. Essential homework for those that still believe Techno is 'banging'...

Very nice follow up to the "Ten Days Of Blue" album on the Peacefrog label. Some tracks remind me of that album and are the ones I would regard the best on this one. A2-Ocean (London Mix), B1-Fate, B2-Casting Shadows (On Warm Sundays), C1-Now And Always, C2-Lavinia, D1-Everything Under The Sun and ofcourse the revisited track "Decembers Tragedy" from "Ten Days Of Blue". This album is not as spectaculare as "Ten Days Of Blue" but is sertainly a must for people liking that beautiful ambient, warm techno sound Beltran produces. Recomended.

John Beltran returns to Peacefrog with his Placid Angles moniker. The Cry goes along the same lines his earlier album, Ten Days of Blue. “Scarlett Season” sets us squarely back in Detroit, but “Ocean (London Mix)” puts us back out to sea in waves of ambience and disembodied vocal samples. “Her Elements” shuffles along at a stately pace. Again, Beltran knows how to put together a solid song, but this album isn’t quite as strong as Ten Days of Blue. The production is crisp, but it lacks that certain je ne sais quoi. Worth having in your collection, definitely, but not necessarily one you’ll find yourself listening to repeatedly and endlessly.
