Saw John Martyn in Manchester when this album came out. "Don't clap yet" he said as he came on "you might not like it".Well - he was right - I didn't much... he had gone electric and was playing a sort of Bruce Springsteen inspired type of commercial rock set which I assume he thought would go well in the US. Can't blame him for trying though.... he deserved much greater fame (and fortune) than he had achieved by that point.(The support was Durutti Column so the evening wasn't a total waste of time).A couple years before that I saw John at the Brighton Dome and he was fantastic... playing the hypnotic acoustic crossover blues/folk/jazz style which was his real forte. (I think Phil Collins was playing drums trivia fans).
