After saying I would never buy unofficial compilations of officially released material I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the "Sex Pistols- Songs from the Movies" and "Killing Joke Peel Sessions" bootleg LP's and forced to re-think my policy. When bootleggers can create better sounding releases than official record companies which, after all have access to masters then ones sympathy for the plight of the official record industry drains away!I managed to get hold of "This is Dub Clash" for just £10 , The Sleeve is thick hard wearing cardboard with a rare picture (May-june 1980?) on the front.the back cover uses the famous shot of the Clash posing in front of a 1930's Soviet propaganda poster showing all the nationalities of the USSR serving together in the Red Army. The Vinyl is of excellent quality, very thick with excellent bass response and is near silent between tracks.Wisely the compilers resisted the temptation to cram on tracks at the expense of quality and settled for 3 a side, with no end of side distortion audible on tracks a3 and b3- something many official releases can't claim! (my copy is the Black Vinyl edition, I can't comment on the marbled blue version)sound quality is excellent throughout except from the final track , which was clearly lifted from the 12" singlefair enough, i guess a better source wasn't available when this was compiled. (when was that?)Robber Dub has a short drop out at the start like someone paused the source material while the disc was being cut. but it soon stopped bothering me.The editing of the comic interludes from Sandanista! is a bit ragged but not enough to spoil enjoyment.now for some purely subjective gripes about track selection: while Outside Broadcast is great, I'd definitely not have included "Radio 5"- Micks ham fisted attempts at Grandmaster flash style scratching are laughable. if you've ever thought scratching was something anyone could do - then you need to hear how awful it can sound when done badly!Sorry Mick you should never be allowed near a turntable - i can't imagine how they thought it was good enough to release in 1981"Living in fame" isn't as annoying as "radio 5" but i'm not keen on it I'd have replaced the 2 aforementioned tracks with either "Silicon on Saphire", "Futura Dub" or "one more dub""Futura Dub" being my preferred option as it would save people from having to track down the overpriced futura 12" from 1983.But, this is a really fun compilation with great sound that i find very addictive, its far from being the cash-in that some may suspect.also because its vastly cheaper to buy an audiophile quality record player than an audiophile quality CD player this is the best quality i've ever heard these tracks in. in comparison with the 1999 cd remasters the bass sounds much more natural.why can't the legit labels do something like this?, well even if they did they'd probably compress it to death and ruin it.so I thank you Mr Bootlegger, you have done a public service. its one of my favourite LP's already after only a month
