A classic of chill-out, A Man Called Adam’s DUENDE was one of the albums that helped kickstart the monster now known as Ibiza. But it’s a pleasure nonetheless. The opener, “Easter Song,” is one of the most pleasing songs (with a flute!) about resurrection ever put to wax; “Oaktown” follows with some slow, wiggly funk. “All My Favorite People (Stay With Me)” is a downtempo Scottish cri de coeur, while “So You Say” and “Wouldn’t She,” both unrequited love songs, carry the torch. A Man Called Adam displays range, too: the neo-mellow-disco of “Automatic/Sexomatic” and “Que Tal America?” show the big boys how it’s done; “Bite the Pillow” maintains the disco attitude, but with goofily fun vocals. “Duende” and “Estelle” end the album on a blissful note (with more flutes!). Though it may have spawned a monster, DUENDE still has the ability to transport you to a bucolic isle far, far away.
