Qumenalu
A truly transcendental and hypnotic masterpiece of an album. To sum up: African Pygmy chants with Enigma style beats and grooves and some occasional broken English dialogues thrown into the mix. A truly unique release that brings you to a point of calmness and tranquility as very few releases in the "world beat" or "ethno electronic" genres can truly do. Their later material is fantastic as well but this capture's the surreal quality to a paramount. "Sweet Lullabye" is the track most will recognize (as found on many 'new age' comps back in the day ala Pure Moods) with it's melancholy vocal sample and hypnotic beat. However, this version is a bit darker and more ambient in nature than the single edit found on let's say the "Pure Moods" compilation. To me, this was a bit of a surprise but albeit, a very pleasant surprise. The second version towards the end of the album is called the "Ambient Mix" edit. This version has no defined rhythm and is mostly just ambient keyboards for the melody but has the amazing haunting chorus but the result is a fine and enchanting version of "Lullaby" heard in a totally different light. This version is very beautiful. Highly recommended release all around!
