There is kind of a funny story behind me getting this album. I got this album while I was in Japan with my dad on vacation for free. The record store I bought it at (Tokyo Disc Union Heavy Metal Floor 4) had a promotion going on, for every so many yen that you spend, you get so much back. I spent so much that they gave me nearly 2100 yen back, if not more. Found this bad boy hanging on the wall for 1340 yen, I had to pick it up. Now, not being too familiar with Nadja's previous work, I didn't know what to expect when I listened to it. I had only heard a few Nadja songs before, which were harsh, long dirges of sonic chaos. Distortion and reverb on everything, and then drenched with synth. Looking at Nadja, you would not expect the duo to put out such harsh, melancholy tunes. Long Dark Twenties is no exception to their sound. The record starts off with a simple synth line, and then builds up until the drum machine kicks in and the buzz of the guitars form a very catchy, almost Type O Negative (from what I can remember as a little kid) type riff. The vocals are sung, instead of screamed. The over all track is trance like, echoing in and out. The track sounds like Jesu mixed with Final, except executed so much better, and a lot heavier. The relaxation and cloud-like feel is only broken by the melancholiness of the riff. The powerful guitars and power-chords mix very well with the dreamy synth. The packaging of the 7" is just as amazing as the track itself. Long Dark Twenties is something new for the future of Nadja.
