Notes
'Vatra' means 'Fire'"The basic meaning of FIRE as a symbol has been defined by Hinduism. The Gods of Fire, Agni, Indra and Surya are Gods of the earthly, the transcendental and heavenly world. FIRE is a symbol of passion, spirit, intuitive cognition, wandering souls and the Divine Spirit. God is identical to and represented by FIRE. Brahma and Jahve also appear in brightly burning shapes symbolising the bond between God and his people. Christian iconography often uses FIRE-symbolism; when God manifests himself to Moses through the burning bush, the flames represent religious fervour and the martyrdom of the Saints.
FIRE not only personifies God and the divine, but Man as well. Man seeks to melt away his shell to be reunited with FIRE; the source he was once separated from. In its earthly meaning, FIRE symbolizes the mind and the cognition with all their implications.
The power of FIRE is beyond perception; it renews, purifies and regenerates. It instils respect, it brings matter in a subtle condition by melting down its shell, thus enabling messages to pass from the world of the living to the world of the dead. As a fiery extension of light it both purifies and enlightens.
Yet, FIRE's power is also diabolical and negative. Smoke obscures, suffocates, burns, swallows and destroys, it stands for punishment and war.
Whether in its destructive or creative form, FIRE has a divine, earthly and netherwordly origin. Hell-FIRE not so much burns and destroys, but prevents regeneration and renewal.
The master of all powers created FIRE just as he created the cosmos. He is the smith at the forge who shapes and forms, makes noise, lights and colour. He elevate FIRE's powers, thereby destroying and chasing away demons. He is identical to the guardian of soul and spirits, to the master of archaic Man, a shaman (magician and soothsayer).
Joseph Beuys firmly believed that an artiost is close to, even kindred to a shaman. Like a shaman, he possesses these powers to protect the souls and spirits of ancient and future times from immeasurable depths. The exquisite and subtle comprehension of the world of wandering souls and the unfathomableness of human existence is now only preserved by artists through the miracle of their art. The sound, light and words in their work of art, become FIRE in their name, form and shape"
