Their Heart Strings Are Never UndoneIn the Best Possible Taste is full of tasty psychedelic guitars and the album is permeated with the spirit of its time. “I've woken up crash-landed, survived my stint on the brink. I thought money would change everything, it only changes what you drink. It's taken sticks and stones and the broken bones to realise this uncharted bliss is only mine on loan. You can't keep telling me life is going to waste cause it's all been done in the best possible taste.” And élan with which the songs are performed is tremendous and emotional tension is very high. “You've got an engine for a heart that always needs a kick start still I want to be a fool like you.” The songs are vivid and sarcastic and they boast brilliant tunes. “I left town on the six o'clock train seeing my reflections as it rushed down the drain my life in ruins and my hair was in a mess the Sunday papers – but I'd just lost interest… Wrong time, wrong place but the best way possible in one hour I aged but in the best possible taste.”

After the promise of their second album, "Sleepwalking", this should've been another step up, but it wasn't. Although it does sound more "mature" and the production seems fuller and more methodical, it actually acts to the detriment of the music's energy...it's all a bit tamer than Kingmaker should be. Or perhaps it's the songs themselves, far more plodding and lyrically mundane than Kingmaker's prior efforts, focusing largely on depressing scenarios that verge on dullness. One gets the sense that not all was well in the band, which seems to be borne out by later interviews with the band about this point in their history. They were unhappy with the music industry, especially their label, and had fallen out of favor with the fickle UK music journalists. It's simply not an enjoyable listen, unfortunately, although it does have some worthwhile moments where the band executes a tight change or nice bridge here or there, and Loz Hardy's snarky witticisms appear peppered throughout. This was the group's last gasp, and it feels exactly like it.
