While few of my friends would name Rabies as one of Skinny Puppy's top albums, it's been my favorite of theirs since its release in 1989. "Tin Omen" is one of the most kick ass songs they ever did, and yes I know Al Jourganson played a major role in this album, thus the guitars for virtually the first time, at least at this density, nonetheless, I loved the slight shift in sound. More aggressive while retaining the Puppy core & attitude. "Worlock" and "Rodent" are two more songs I think are strong on this album. Meanwhile, the short "Rain" is more typical Puppy terror at its best. And in case you haven't looked at the track listing, the final song is a near-17 minute live song that's not bad at all. I view this as a fairly unique Puppy album, mainly because of the reliance on thrashing the heck out of those strings, when previously it had all been synth, sequencer, etc. I thought it added something positive. Still, I recall some "purists" being offended at the heavy use of guitar on this album. That hadn't been their style, they weren't "allowed" by some fans and critics, even, to experiment and broaden their sound. I obviously disagreed, still do, and to this day, I play this album at least once a week. Since 1989. That's a long time. For anyone who wants to hear the pseudo-"fathers" of industrial basically mix it up with Ministry, this is a great album. If you're an old school purist, I understand, it's not for you. Still, for me, I give it 5 stars & couldn't recommend it more. If you can't "slam dance" (haven't heard those words in decades) to "Tin Omen," something's wrong. Cheers!
