There aren't many albums with a piano and 2 double basses. Not only is this one of the few existing (aside from David Haney's "Blue Flint Girl" and "Blues Royale" on CIMP), it also sets the bar pretty high. The music found on the 3 tracks is breathtaking and that is an understatement. Fred Van Hove uses the piano at times as a percussion device rather than a keyboard. The two basses build a foundation and a counterbalance and they do it with an astonishing imagination and extraordinary knowledge of their instruments. They switch seamlessly between plucking and bowing. 2 of the tracks are longer and one would imagine, that the music would ease a bit after some time. It is quite the opposite. The tunes are a seamingly endless flow of ideas, all utterly well executed. There is so much going on, that it took me many listening sessions to even understand some aspects of the tracks. Fans of the instruments and creative jazz in generell have a superb record on hand here. Fred Van Hove's piano is slightly left of center, the 2 basses are to his left and right.
