invasion
Deacon Blue's first and arguably best album. Born in a Storm sets the tone as a poetic intro to the track Raintown with its cascading of piano at the start like rain running down a window as the song bemoans being away from home and all you love. I think I heard that Ragman is about Ricky meeting a singing idol and blowing it! The relax feel continues into Looks Like Spency Tracey Now. Loaded became a live favourite and shows Deacon Blue at their anthemic best. When Will You Make My Telephone Ring was their breakthrough single (but actually isn't my personal favourite). The second side begins with Chocolate girl rather cleverly sung from the point of view of a put-upon girl but completely filled with the words of her selfish man. Following on is the live crowds favourite, the socialist anthem Dignity. The Very Thing became one of my favourites after its use as the theme tune to the BBC drama series "Take Me Home", its just a really goos pop song. Loves Great Fears rather slides by and for me lacks some of the impact of the rest of the album. The finale is the great crescendo of Town To Be Blamed with Ricky and Lorraine providing a typically emotional vocal double act at is conclusion. This is still an album I play and really enjoy which perhaps hasn't aged as much as the more commercial When The World Knows Your Name.
