His decision to terminate the band’s career was prevented by his fans calling for him to carry on. And he didn’t really have to look for new colleagues: they duly emerged in the most natural manner – from the band’s closest circle.Říha’s association with musicians one or two generations younger served to increase the energy on stage and in the studio alike. The traditional songs with a seemingly simple ground-plan acquired harder blues elements, while the outspoken lyrics, reflecting the fates of people living next door and a view of the state of the world, contain the time-honoured repertoire Gellner elements. The inwardly ironic title (Joys of Life) of the album (and of one of the ten new songs) has a double-edged message. There are simply joys and “joys”: the death around us is both a warning and an impulse.Messrs Říha, Budka and Timpl plunged into the recording (at the Sono studio) with immense zest. The possible first singles are the songs Casablanka and Metrosexuál, recalled on the CD as a bonus with a documentary from the recording sessions.
